The telecoms giant said the initiative has helped those at risk of data poverty to stay connected, to access online services such as medical appointments or benefits such as Universal Credit, and to apply for jobs or attend virtual job interviews.

The crash prompted calls from the Transport Workers Union for greater safety measures including an extra arrester bed near the end of the freeway, a cut in the speed limit for heavy vehicles from 60 to 40km/h and compulsory training for drivers on navigating steep descents.

The brand description reads: ‘This mini food chopper is equipped with four stainless steel blades. You can chop, grind various ingredients, such as salsa, sauces, dips, dressings, onions, small herbs, baby food, meat, ham, garlic, onion, enriching your dishes for your family!’

Nine in 10 low income households say they are worried about their finances and with the the cost of essential bills such as food and energy rising, some say they may be forced to ditch the internet connection to save money.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said while the state government was willing to explore extra safety measures for the freeway, it was first important to determine the cause of the crash, be that driver error or a mechanical failure.

It also added that recent rises in asset values and the Government’s decision last year to maintain the IHT tax free thresholds at 2020 to 2021 levels up to and including 2025 to 2026 – which will mean people are increasingly likely to be caught.

The base of the freeway – where hills commuters, trucks and people driving to Adelaide from the eastern states converge – has been the scene of a number of serious crashes and near misses in recent years.

To ease the problems with computer clocks that don’t like 61-second minutes, Google pioneered the idea of the “leap smear” that makes the leap second’s changes in many tiny steps over the course of a day.

The temporal tweak causes more problems — like internet outages — than benefits, they say. And dealing with leap seconds ultimately is futile, the group argues, since the Earth’s rotational speed hasn’t actually changed much historically.

‘Everyone is taking the p**s at the moment and I don’t know why because all the queues have disappeared from the chippy,’ the wrote. ‘Pubs and restaurants are pretty empty, everyone has cut back because of high prices, so they lose out even more in the end!’

Andrew Tully, technical director at Canada Life, said: ‘HMRC is witnessing an incredible spike in income from IHT delivering £1.8billion to the taxman already this financial year, £300million higher than the same period last year.

‘There has also been a higher volume of wealth transfers due to Covid – partly due to more deaths in the elderly population, but also as some people make outright gifts to help family during this difficult period.

The tech giants and two key agencies agree that it’s time to ditch the leap second. Those are the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and its French equivalent, the Bureau International de Poids et Mesures (BIPM).

Not everyone was shocked by the price however, with one person, seemingly referring to the cost of living crisis, writing: ‘Cheese, where I live, in Asda is about £2.50/2.70. The price has gone up quite a bit.’

The leap second change triggered a massive Reddit outage in 2012, as well as related problems at Mozilla, LinkedIn, Yelp and airline booking service Amadeus. In 2017, a leap second glitch at Cloudflare knocked a fraction of the network infrastructure company’s customers’ servers offline. Cloudflare’s software, comparing two clocks, calculated that time had gone backward but couldn’t properly handle that result.
